Franchise Thesis: Coopa Troopas

The easiest version of Nate’s story would be to call this a rebuild. That is technically true, but it misses what makes the franchise interesting.

Rebuilders usually make themselves obvious. They strip the roster down, advertise patience, and turn every useful veteran into another future asset. Coopa Troopas never became that clean.

Nate still rosters Joel Embiid, Zion Williamson and Rudy Gobert. There are useful older players around the edges. This is not a roster that followed some pure youth-only doctrine.

His behavior has still pointed in one direction for a long time.

The most revealing move came in February 2025, when Nate sent Stephen Curry to brodiedean8 and received Brandon Miller. That is the kind of trade that tells you more about a franchise than a hundred chat messages ever could. Curry could help the present. Miller belonged to the future. Nate chose the timeline he wanted.

A year later, the pattern became even harder to miss. Nate sent Kawhi Leonard and Kristaps Porziņģis to 44Colt and received Kyshawn George, brodiedean8’s 2028 first, 44Colt’s 2027 first and 44Colt’s 2028 first.

Again, the roster got younger. The calendar got longer.

That matters because Nate had already shown he could improve without abandoning the process. Coopa Troopas went from 3-18 in 2024 to 10-11 in 2025. The tempting response after a jump like that would have been to chase the final few wins. Instead, the franchise kept pushing value forward.

That is Coopa Troopas’ real identity. Nate is willing to get better without pretending better means finished.

The clearest summary of the franchise came this summer.

Nate sent Ja Morant and Jalen Green to BigSuge for BigSuge’s 2026 first, BigSuge’s 2026 second and BigSuge’s 2027 second. The larger deal path eventually left Nate with AJ Dybantsa, Yaxel Lendeborg and Collin Murray-Boyles after Thomas Sorber also moved.

Read that again as an identity choice.

Morant and Green were already established roster pieces. Nate converted that part of the team into another wave of youth.

Then he used the 2026 rookie draft aggressively. Dybantsa went to Coopa Troopas at No. 3. Darius Acuff followed at No. 5. Mikel Brown came at No. 12, Lendeborg at No. 13 and Christian Anderson at No. 25.

There is a difference between owning young players and building around the idea of young players. Nate has crossed it.

Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper were already on the roster. Brandon Miller was already there. Donovan Clingan was already there. Then the franchise added Dybantsa, Acuff, Brown and Lendeborg in the same rookie class.

The roster is an argument that Nate would rather own several chances at the next elite dynasty asset than concentrate everything into the strongest possible 2026 lineup.

That is a real choice. It also comes with a real cost.

A sharp reader can look at this roster and ask the obvious question: if Nate is so committed to the future, why are Embiid, Zion and Gobert still here?

That is the tension Coopa Troopas has not resolved.

The veteran core creates a strange middle ground. Embiid and Zion can still matter enormously to a fantasy lineup, but Nate has surrounded them with players whose value case stretches far beyond this season. That can work. It can also leave the roster caught between timelines.

The future assets make patience easy. The veteran names make patience harder.

Nate has already shown he will move established players when the return fits his direction. Curry became Miller. Kawhi and Porziņģis became George and future firsts. Morant and Green became the raw material for another young group.

So Embiid, Zion and Gobert do not contradict the larger identity yet. They test it.

If Coopa Troopas starts strong, Nate suddenly has a reason to let the veterans help carry the kids. If the roster falls behind, the transaction history suggests he will have to look at those older pieces the same way he looked at Curry, Kawhi and Morant: as parts of the present that might be worth more when converted into the future.

That is the second-order consequence of everything Nate has built. Eventually, patience forces a decision.

Nate’s chat profile makes him look like one of the league’s social centers. He built the companion site. He helped new owners through the dispersal process. His messages bounce between league organization, jokes and lines like, “Real ball knowers know where TJ Leaf went to college.”

That version of Nate is easy to understand. He likes the league itself.

The roster shows the harder edge.

A manager who treats the league casually does not repeatedly trade recognizable veterans for younger assets, keep collecting first-round picks in future years, and then spend five selections across a rookie draft building another layer underneath the roster.

Nate currently holds 44Colt’s 2027 first, brodiedean8’s 2028 first and 44Colt’s 2028 first. Those are not trophies for having won a trade. They are more decisions waiting for him.

Even the recent Jared McCain deal fits the same tension. Nate sent McCain and his own 2027 third to matticus808 for Jaden McDaniels. That move nudged the roster slightly back toward present usefulness instead of treating every younger player as untouchable. It was a small reminder that Nate is not collecting prospects for the sake of collecting them.

He wants optionality.

That may be the most accurate word for Coopa Troopas.

Young players give him it. Future firsts give him it. Veterans give him it. A roster spread across several different stages gives him more paths than a team that has already declared exactly what it must be.

But optionality only matters until the season asks you to choose.

Coopa Troopas no longer has the excuse of being the team that went 3-18. Nate already proved last season that the franchise could climb.

Now the roster has enough young talent that another step forward is reasonable to expect, while the long-term construction still gives him every reason to protect what comes after 2026.

That is where the playful name finally runs into the serious transaction log.

Nate has spent two years refusing to choose between improving now and building later. He has been good enough at it to keep both options alive.

This season asks whether Coopa Troopas can keep doing that, or whether the roster finally forces Nate to decide which version of the franchise is real.
