Hot Seat: goochshot Spent Two Months Trading in Circles and Landed Nowhere

Marcus Vale·September 21, 2026·3 min read

goochshot, you made more trades than anyone in Da League this off-season, and you still cannot tell me what your franchise is trying to be.

That is the charge. Not that you were quiet. Not that you stood pat while the league rewired itself around you. The opposite. You were the busiest man in the building, and you used all that motion to walk in a full circle right back to where you started, except now you have fewer draft picks and a roster that argues with itself.

A GM who won't pick a lane doesn't get a slow death in this format. He gets lapped.

The Receipts Don't Agree With Each Other

Start in June, when you sent Victor Wembanyama to lilsweet96 and got back Scottie Barnes, Paolo Banchero, Kon Knueppel, and a first-round pick. Sell the best young big in the sport for a healthy, ready trio. Fine. That is the move of a man who has decided he wants to win soon, with bodies he can trust to be on the floor.

Then, days later, you handed matticus808 your 2026 and 2027 first-round picks for Trey Murphy.

Read that again. Two firsts. For one wing. That is not a retooler's trade; that is a man kicking the door in and betting the near future that his window is open right now.

So I believed you. I had you filed as a contender.

Then July arrived and you filed a different plan. You shipped Julius Randle and Isaiah Collier to brodiedean8 and took back Davion Mitchell, Moussa Diabaté, and brodiedean8's 2029 first and third. You sold two rotation pieces for role players and future paper. You also flipped Cason Wallace to matticus808 for three second-round picks.

In eight weeks you spent two firsts to win now and then sold your own veterans for picks that mature in 2029. One of those instincts is right. They cannot both be.

That is the case, and every line of your own trade log signed it.

Which GM is closest to running out of excuses?

The Best Version of the Defense

Now let me build the strongest argument that you knew exactly what you were doing, because the honest prosecution states it before it buries it.

The Wembanyama sale may age like fine work. Wemby is reportedly dealing with a blood clot in his shoulder that some describe as career-threatening, and cashing him for Banchero, Barnes, and Knueppel is the exact trade a sharp GM makes when he catches a whiff of that risk before the market does. You didn't panic-sell a star. You may have sold the one asset in this league whose floor just fell out.

And that 2029 first you pried out of brodiedean8? That is a heist. Brodie is the same GM our Franchise Diaries caught torching his future to chase one playoff round he already lost, the man who sold Meleek Thomas for a 2028 third because he cannot stop dealing. Taking his 2029 while he is that far gone is free value. You did not overpay for it. He handed it over.

The steel-man is real: maybe this was not indecision. Maybe it was opportunism, taking value wherever a rival left it lying around.

The Verdict

Here is where the defense collapses.

Opportunism with no destination is just activity. A heist means nothing if you have no car in the alley, and you spent the summer robbing everyone without deciding where you were driving.

The two-firsts-for-Trey-Murphy move only makes sense if you are all-in this season. The Randle and Collier sell-off only makes sense if you are not. You cannot defend both with the same mouth, and pointing at the smart Wemby trade does not resolve it. It sharpens the problem. You proved you can read value. Then you spent that skill pulling your own roster in two directions at once.

BigSuge did the opposite, and it is why he sleeps fine. He decided he was winning now and never blinked, stacking Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, and Darius Garland, then paying picks to pull in Ja Morant and Jalen Green on top. You may hate the bill he will owe someday. At least he knows which season he is playing for. matticus808 is tanking on purpose with five rookies, and Tank Watch already read you his flight plan. Even the guy losing on purpose committed to a direction. You are the only contender-adjacent roster in the league still asking the question in August.

Guilty. Not of a bad trade. Of eleven trades that never agreed on a goal.

Pick your season before the season picks it for you.

One Clot Report Away

The next man on this seat is the GM sitting on the other side of your best deal.

lilsweet96 gave up Barnes, Banchero, and Knueppel to land Wembanyama, which means his entire build now rides on the shoulder you were smart enough to get rid of. One more update on that clot, and the reported career-threatening kind, and the crown jewel of his roster becomes the reason we write his name here next.

He bet everything on the one player you decided you didn't want to own.

Reported from 4 approved sources in the league record.
