Power Rankings, Off-Season 2026: The Champ Went Shopping and the League Flinched

Bill Slimmons·July 31, 2026·6 min read

alecb5 won the title in March and then spent the whole summer acting like a man who thinks one ring is a first draft. That's the story of this off-season, and everything else in these rankings is a reaction to it. Nine other franchises watched the champ get better, and they split into two camps: the ones who tried to match him bullet for bullet, and the ones who tore the whole thing down and started counting picks. Nobody stood still. We're all 0-0 right now, every roster frozen before tipoff, which means these rankings are pure roster and pure history, and history in this league has a very long memory.

The Title Tier

alecb5 won it all at 14-7 on the back of one deadline heist a year ago (we've re-litigated that one enough). He shipped Chet Holmgren, Tyler Herro, and a 2028 first to matticus808 and got back Tyrese Haliburton and Walker Kessler. Read that last name twice. Kessler was the guy alecb5 gave up to pry Giddey loose in the first place, and now he's back, sitting on the same roster as the player he was traded for. You surrender a young center to win a title, then go buy the young center back a year later because you can. That's not a rebuild so much as a man redecorating a house he already owns. Luka Dončić, Jaylen Brown, Bam Adebayo, Haliburton, Giddey, Kessler: there's no soft spot on this roster and no obvious reason the defending champ gets worse. The counter-argument is that title windows are fragile and one bad March erases a great everything-else, which, sure. But you rank the champ first until somebody takes it, and nobody here has.

brodiedean8 is the most fascinating team in the league, and it has almost nothing to do with the talent, though the talent is absurd. Nikola Jokić, Stephen Curry, LeBron James, and now Trae Young and Julius Randle, both imported this summer. Brodie sent 44Colt a haul that started with Jrue Holiday and Brandon Ingram to land Trae, then handed goochshot Davion Mitchell, Moussa Diabaté, and his 2029 first and third for Randle and Isaiah Collier. Add it up: brodie has now dealt his first-round pick in 2027, 2028, and 2029. Three straight drafts, gone. This is the most aggressive win-now push in league history, run by the exact GM whose whole legend is winning everything except the part that counts. He went 19-2 and lost in Round 1. He is stacking a roster for a season that gets decided in a single March week, which is the one week his teams keep vanishing. The bet is that enough Hall of Famers finally cracks the code. The risk is that LeBron is ancient, Randle has spent his career hurt, and there are no picks left to patch it if this group flames out in the bracket again. Boldest roster in the league, scariest place to be standing.

Which ranking will look wrong first?

The Talented and the Terrified

44Colt went 13-8 and named the team The Injury Report, which is either self-awareness or a cry for help. Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kawhi Leonard, Karl-Anthony Towns, Devin Booker, Evan Mobley: on paper that's a top-three roster. In practice, Kawhi has turned availability into a performance art, Booker's timeline was a question mark heading out of last season, and Kawhi's real-world move is tangled in a reported league investigation that has stalled it. 44Colt built this by mortgaging the future, sending Natebarrett5 his own 2027 and 2028 firsts plus brodie's 2028 to land Kawhi. The talent says contender. The medical file says pray. The ceiling here is the highest in the league and the floor is a crater, and which one shows up depends on things no GM controls.

BigSuge went 6-15 and responded by collecting every star who might be one bad MRI from a lost year. Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum, Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, Ja Morant, LaMelo Ball. That's a genuinely terrifying starting five and a terrifying actuarial table. Suge pulled Ja Morant and Jalen Green out of Natebarrett5 for a stack of picks and grabbed Kyrie and Darius Garland from lilsweet96. The trouble is that real-world reality keeps chipping at the group: Davis got moved to Washington, Durant to Houston, Kyrie's future in Dallas is suddenly a question with a rookie taking over, and Ja's availability has been a running concern for years. If everyone plays, this roster is top four. The phrase "if everyone plays" has never once described a Ja Morant season.

The Muddled Middle

Nighthawk2334 owns the single best moment of the last two seasons and doesn't get enough credit for it. This is the 11-10 team that ended brodie's 19-2 year in Round 1, the giant-killer, built around the reigning MVP in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Around him: Lauri Markkanen, Alperen Sengun, Jaren Jackson, Austin Reaves, plus Tyler Herro imported from matticus808 this summer. That's a real playoff roster with the best individual anchor in this whole tier. The reason Nighthawk sits in the middle and not higher is that the supporting cast, MVP aside, doesn't scare anyone the way the rosters above it do. But if you're picking one team down here to ruin somebody's March, history says take the guy who's already done it.

avery228 debuts at 0-0 and built one of the deepest rosters in the league from a standing start. Anthony Edwards, Jalen Brunson, Franz Wagner, Pascal Siakam, Ivica Zubac, with Derrick White and Josh Hart and OG Anunoby behind them. There's no glaring weakness here and no top-five superstar either, which is the whole story: nine credible starters and nobody you build a Finals around. avery mostly ran it back after the roster came together, declining to chase a headliner. A brand-new GM with a ready-made playoff team and no idea yet whether it has a gear the contenders don't. We find out in October.

goochshot went 18-3 last year, the second-best regular season this league has ever seen, and then traded Victor Wembanyama. Let that sit. The best young center on the planet, dealt to lilsweet96 for Scottie Barnes, Paolo Banchero, and Kon Knueppel. You can read that as panic or as vision, and I lean vision: goochshot swapped one franchise pillar for three young cornerstones and kept James Harden, Donovan Mitchell, and Tyrese Maxey around them. A retool wearing a teardown's clothes. The 18-3 roster is gone, and the one that replaced it is younger, deeper, and pointed at a longer window. The question is whether shipping the single best asset in a deal has ever actually made a team better. Usually it doesn't. goochshot is betting he's the exception.

The Long Game

Natebarrett5 went 3-18 two years ago, the worst season in league history, and has quietly turned the basement into the best rebuild going. Cooper Flagg, AJ Dybantsa, Dylan Harper, Cedric Coward, Brandon Miller: a young core most contenders would part with real assets to own. Nate stacked the picks to match, pulling 44Colt's 2027 and 2028 firsts and brodie's 2028 first out of the Kawhi and Trae deals. The vets are aging and brittle (Joel Embiid's knees, Rudy Gobert's mileage), but nobody here is trying to win now. Nate spent two years as the punchline and built the one thing every contender in this league is running out of: a future. Worst record ever to most enviable timeline. That's a turnaround.

lilsweet96 debuts at 0-0 and immediately won the biggest trade of the off-season, landing Victor Wembanyama from goochshot to headline a young core with De'Aaron Fox, Mikal Bridges, Domantas Sabonis, and Bennedict Mathurin. Building a first-year franchise around the best young big in basketball is the correct cheat code. The roster isn't ready to contend, but the cornerstone is the one every other rebuild wishes it had.

matticus808 picked the team name Sam Presti's Burner, which tells you the whole plan. He traded away Haliburton, Kessler, Trey Murphy, and Tyler Herro for a vault of picks and young fliers, kept Chet Holmgren as the keeper, and is sitting on a war chest that includes alecb5's 2028 first and 44Colt's 2029 first. It's 0-0 and it'll be near the bottom this year on purpose. This is the one team that would be thrilled to finish last, and the only one whose plan is working exactly as designed.

matticus is going to lose a lot of games and enjoy every one of them, which, in a league where brodie keeps trading away Marches he hasn't won yet, might be the sanest strategy anybody here has.
