Rebuild Index: The Presti Burner Is the Only Real Plan

The team name is a tell, and for once the roster backs up the bit.

matticus808 walked into the dispersal draft, grabbed established production, and immediately turned around and sold it. He drafted Tyrese Haliburton, Walker Kessler, and Trey Murphy, three players who help you win games right now, and none of them are on his roster. Haliburton and Kessler went to alecb5 in this year's swap, which brought back Chet Holmgren and alecb5's own 2028 first. Trey Murphy went to goochshot for goochshot's 2026 and 2027 firsts. He took the veterans a rebuilder isn't supposed to want and converted them into youth and picks before the ink dried.

Look at what the picks became. Three first-round rookies in this year's draft: Darryn Peterson at pick 2, Kingston Flemings at pick 7, Morez Johnson at pick 9. That's not a lottery ticket, that's a fistful of them, layered on top of a genuine young anchor in Holmgren next to Jalen Williams. And the future board is stocked: his own firsts, plus goochshot's 2027, alecb5's 2028, and 44Colt's 2029. He's holding other people's first-round picks the way a front office that plans to be picking late for a decade does.

The strongest case against him is the one I keep circling. This is all paper. Peterson reportedly dealt with creatine-related cramping severe enough to land him in the hospital during his freshman year, which is a real availability question on your headline rookie, not a footnote. Flemings and Johnson are bets, not players yet. If two of the three miss, the whole thing thins out fast, and in a 10-team league the talent pool isn't deep enough to hide a whiffed draft.

I still grade it an A because he already has the floor. Holmgren and Williams are a top-15 frontcourt foundation that keeps him from bottoming out while the kids cook, and every future first he's holding gets more valuable as the picks convey against teams that are aging. He can be bad on purpose and good by accident in the same season. That's the Presti model, and he's the only one in the league actually running it.

Timeline: contention window opens 2028, and he can defend every step of how he got there.

Nate went 10-11 last year with a roster that no longer exists, and that's the point.

He did the unglamorous version of the same teardown. He shipped Ja Morant and Jalen Green to BigSuge for BigSuge's 2026 first plus two second-rounders, and turned that first into AJ Dybantsa at No. 3. He sent Kawhi Leonard and Kristaps Porzingis to 44Colt for Kyshawn George plus brodiedean8's 2028 first, 44Colt's 2027 first, and 44Colt's 2028 first. He sold the fragile, aging pieces at the top of their value and walked away with three future firsts and a young perimeter room that's frankly a little absurd: Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper, Dybantsa, then Darius Acuff and Mikel Brown added in this rookie draft.

So why the minus. Because he's got a foot on the gas and a foot on the brake. He's anchoring all that youth to Joel Embiid, Rudy Gobert, and Zion Williamson, and that is three of the least available veterans you can assemble on purpose. Embiid reportedly told Philadelphia's front office he's healthy this offseason, which is exactly the sentence you hear about a player who has managed 96 games over three seasons. If that trio holds, Nate might sneak toward the middle and waste a year the kids should spend developing. If it breaks, the rebuild accelerates and the picks get better. The one thing that won't break right on schedule is the health of the old guys, and he's built as if it will.

Clean up the veteran clutter and this is an A. As is, it's a real plan with a hedge he doesn't need. Window: 2028, same as matticus808, with more talent already in the building and slightly worse odds the picks land high.

This is the single boldest swing in the league, and I'm not fully sold on the price.

lilsweet96 took Scottie Barnes, Paolo Banchero, and Kon Knueppel, three young pieces you could build around, and packaged them to goochshot to consolidate into Victor Wembanyama. On talent, I get it. Wemby is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, the youngest and first unanimous winner of that award, and he is the best long-term asset any GM in this league controls. If you're going to bet a rebuild on one name, that's the name.

The concern is everything around him. Sabonis, Jarrett Allen, Mikal Bridges, Michael Porter Jr., De'Aaron Fox: that's not a teardown supporting cast, that's a win-something-now group bolted to a generational rebuild centerpiece. The roster can't decide what year it's living in. Barnes is reportedly durable and firmly a franchise piece in Toronto, and lilsweet96 gave that certainty away for a bigger ceiling and a thinner floor.

What saves the grade is the pick board, and it's sneaky. He's holding alecb5's 2027 first and BigSuge's 2027 first. Sit with that second one. He sent Kyrie Irving and Darius Garland to BigSuge and got BigSuge's 2027 first back, which means the more BigSuge's veteran gamble ages and craters, the higher that pick lands. His rebuild is quietly short one of its rivals' futures. Get Wemby a coherent supporting timeline and this jumps. Right now it's a superstar and a muddle. Window: murky, and that's the problem.

This is the paradox case, and it's not close.

BigSuge finished 6-15. That is a team the math says should be selling, collecting, and getting young. Instead he did the opposite in broad daylight. He sent Ja Morant and Jalen Green out and, in a separate move, sent Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Matas Buzelis, and his own 2027 first to lilsweet96 to bring in Kyrie Irving and Darius Garland. He built an aging core around Kevin Durant, Kyrie, Anthony Davis, and Jayson Tatum, then handed a bottom-three roster's future first to a rebuilder to do it.

Grade the decision, not the box score, and it still fails. Davis was reportedly limited to 29 appearances in the stretch since his 2025 trade and has set himself the goal of playing all 82 in Washington, which is a goal, not a track record. You're leaning a win-now build on a center who's been available a third of the time, behind a core whose best days are chronological history. A real front office cannot defend paying a future first off a 6-15 season to chase a ceiling that requires four thirtysomethings to all stay healthy at once. I'm not laying that price.

There's a thin silver lining: he still holds brodiedean8's 2027 first, so the cupboard isn't bare. But this isn't a rebuild I can audit, because there isn't one. It's a bottom-tier team playing dress-up as a contender, and the 2027 first he sent lilsweet96 gets more expensive every time this group loses.

lilsweet96 has the best single asset in Wembanyama and Nate has the deepest pile of young talent, but matticus808 is the only one holding both ends of the rope: a young anchor good enough to keep him competitive and enough future firsts to keep the machine feeding itself. The others need one thing to break exactly right, a superstar's supporting cast or a fragile veteran trio. matticus808 needs one of three rookie firsts to hit, and he gets three swings. That isn't hope; it's a process you can defend in the room, with a year attached to it.

Everyone else in this index is either building around a bet or pretending they aren't building at all. He's the one who already knows what year he's trying to win.
