The Chat Log, Off-Season 2026: Just Release Them, Pal

Nico Hart·July 31, 2026·3 min read

Natebarrett5 opened a garage sale in the middle of the group chat and priced everything to move. Five names hit the block in a row: Bub Carrington, Aaron Wiggins, Rob Dillingham, Dillon Brooks, Jared McCain. Then the pitch, delivered like a guy fanning out watches inside his coat: "Second or third and these guys can be yours." A second or a third. For all five. He was not bundling a haul so much as begging you to take the receipts off his hands.

The room's verdict came from Nighthawk2334, who did not counter, did not haggle, did not even pretend to open the offer. "Just go ahead and release them, pal." That is the single funniest sentence anyone has typed in this league all off-season, and it cost him nothing. No emoji. No follow-up. He looked at a five-for-one fire sale and told the seller to skip the middleman and hit the waiver wire himself.

Natebarrett5, to his credit, did not fold. He picked one item back off the table and tried again, this time targeting Nighthawk directly: "You look like you need a nice Dillion Brooks to tie your team together." A nice Dillon Brooks. To tie your team together. This is a man whose whole real-life brand is embracing the role of the heart and soul in Phoenix, which is another way of saying he leads the league in technical fouls and getting under people's skin. Selling Dillon Brooks as connective tissue is like selling a smoke alarm as a lullaby. Nobody bit. The block stayed a block.

Brodie Confesses, Then Immediately Sells the Body

While Natebarrett5 ran the pawn shop, brodiedean8 did something rarer for him than a quiet night: he told the truth about a trade.

Back in February he shipped Anthony Davis and Jonathan Kuminga and Ryan Rollins to BigSuge and got back Jrue Holiday and Derik Queen. In the chat this off-season, unprompted, the loudest man in the building conceded it: "Trading ad for queen hurt me for this year." He softened the landing the only way he knows how, guessing AD "will prolly play like 50 games tho," which is less a defense than a man appraising the produce he already threw out.

Here is the part that writes itself. Minutes after admitting Queen set him back, brodiedean8 put Derik Queen on the trade block. He gave up Anthony Davis to get the kid, publicly regretted it, and then hung a for-sale sign on the regret. Queen's college teammates called him Baby Jokic for the passing and the feel. Brodie apparently wants to find out what Baby Jokic goes for on the open market roughly four months after paying a superstar to acquire him.

His other move was quieter and somehow funnier. He dropped Reece Fleming and added Mario Hezonja, who is only now trickling back to the NBA after six seasons in Europe. Brodie combed the wire, passed on the young and the available, and reeled in a guy whose last four years happened at Real Madrid. First team all Dome, indeed.

Who should care, and what changes next?

Petty Awards

Cleanest Kill of the Off-Season: Nighthawk2334, "Just go ahead and release them, pal." Five words. Five players. One coffin.

Worst Sales Pitch: Natebarrett5, marketing Dillon Brooks as the guy who ties a roster together. The real Brooks ties a roster together the way a lit match ties a fireworks stand together.

Self-Awareness In A Bottle: brodiedean8, for saying "Trading ad for queen hurt me for this year" out loud and then blocking Queen before the sentence finished cooling. Therapy would be cheaper and slower.

Most Confident Man With Nothing To Show: brodiedean8 again, still insisting "Wilson and Matas? That's a 1 seed," a projection built on two players he has decided are furniture. Caleb Wilson's college season ended in a UNC injury ward. The seeding lives entirely in Brodie's head, rent free, undefeated.

The Nate Barrett Memorial Ghost Award: the entire rest of the league, who watched a man try to give away five players and could not be bothered to counter with a bag of chips.

Somewhere in all of it, matticus808 saw the whole thing coming and asked Natebarrett5 to get the league site back up, promising "the commentary on this will be gold." He was right about the gold. He was wrong about who'd be mining it. Natebarrett5 was too busy running the register.
