He collects players who help him hold a trophy, and he went and got the two best names in the deal: a franchise point guard in Haliburton and one of the sport's premier rim protectors in Kessler. matticus808, a franchise literally named after the most compulsive pick-hoarder alive, did the matticus thing: took the younger big in Holmgren, took a movable veteran in Herro, and pocketed a future first. Win-now versus accumulate. We called it a fair split down two different timelines and moved on.

The catch we flagged even then: the picks were the tiebreaker, and the picks hadn't happened yet.

They became nothing. Not yet. This is the rare deal where the traded picks are a 2027 third and a 2028 first, and the rookie draft that just cashed everyone else's IOUs did not touch either one. What DID turn concrete is the player side, and one detail there matters more than the rest. matticus808 didn't even keep Herro. He flipped him almost immediately to Nighthawk2334, turning the veteran into Nikola Jović, rookie Tre Johnson, and a pair of second-rounders. So matticus's real haul out of this isn't Herro at all. It's Holmgren, a bag of depth, and that unresolved 2028 first. Evan's ledger reads: one clean young center, some spare parts, and a bet that hasn't been called.

And the piece of canon that makes alecb5's side sing: Kessler is a returning character. This is the same Walker Kessler alecb5 shipped out (with two firsts) to pry Josh Giddey loose in the deal that won him the 2025 title. Kessler took the long way around the league and landed right back on alecb5's roster. Alecb5 now has Giddey AND the guy he traded for Giddey. That's not a stat so much as a plot.

So who won? I'm not going to lie to you and hand you a winner, because the asset that decides this trade is the 2028 first, and the 2028 first is a sealed envelope.

Grade the parts we can see and alecb5 is ahead on talent, full stop. Haliburton missed all of last season with the Achilles, but he's the face of a real NBA franchise and he's tracking to open 2026-27 healthy, which means alecb5 bought a top-shelf dynasty point guard at the exact moment his price sagged. Kessler missed most of last year after shoulder surgery, which is the only reason a defensive anchor like that was ever available. Alecb5 took two stars whose health scared other people and paid in a younger big and a veteran he was never going to build around. For a champion trying to stay a champion, that is the correct kind of aggressive.

But the counter-case is the whole case, and it lives in that 2028 first. It's alecb5's OWN pick. If alecb5 keeps being alecb5, that first lands late and matticus turned two present stars into Holmgren and a scrap of nothing, and alecb5 laps the field. If alecb5's window slams shut and the roster craters by 2028, that pick becomes a lottery jackpot and Presti's Burner cleans out the vault the way its namesake always does. You cannot grade a trade whose deciding chip is a wager on one of the two teams' collapse, when that collapse is two years from being knowable.

So the verdict is the honest one: incomplete, and proud of it. Alecb5 wins the part that's played. Matticus wins or loses the part that hasn't started.

For alecb5, the mandate is simple and it doubles as protection: keep winning. Every game the champ stays a contender is a game that turns matticus's 2028 first into garbage. Haliburton and Kessler healthy is a defending-title spine, and holding serve is how alecb5 makes sure this trade ages into a steal instead of a cautionary tale.

For matticus808, this is the patient play, and patience is the only play the franchise knows. Holmgren is real, the depth is fine, and the whole thing hinges on a bet nobody can settle until 2028. Come back in two years and one of us gets to write the ending. Right now the smartest thing either of these GMs can say about this deal is that the ink isn't dry.
