State of the League: Preseason 2026 Ends the Easy Contender Era

Da League has reached the point on my GM Pyramid where owning a championship roster stops making you an automatic contender, because the managers outside the usual favorite conversation have enough actual players to make standing still a losing strategy. Heading into 2026, I’m calling it the No Free Wins test: can you improve your championship chances without assuming somebody else will spend the season helping you look dominant?

That’s the defining change. We’ve spent plenty of time sorting managers by their preferred timeline, and Power Has Split Into Two Timelines covered that distinction. Now we have to deal with the consequence: a manager can care about the future and still put a miserable matchup in front of you this season.

I’m predicting that the established favorites will have a harder time separating from the rest of Da League than they did last season. The reason starts with the newcomers, but it ends with the decisions the incumbents now have to make.

You can keep your place in our preseason conversation. Keeping your distance from everybody else takes work.

The newcomers inherited permission to compete

Three managers departed after 2025, including Ctwhitaker1 and blakeeverroad, who finished at the bottom of the standings. Their replacements entered through a shared dispersal pool, so we cannot pretend avery228 inherited one specific losing team and fixed it. We can compare the competitive situation those departures created with the rosters the new managers actually built.

Start with Antidote.

avery228 has Anthony Edwards, Jalen Brunson, Franz Wagner, Pascal Siakam and Ivica Zubac, and you can reasonably prefer the best players on several established contenders without finding a persuasive reason to treat this roster like an introductory exercise. Derrick White and Josh Hart are there. OG Anunoby and RJ Barrett are on the bench. Cameron Boozer was his selection at the top of this league’s completed rookie draft.

The important part is the number of different players avery228 can lean on while he figures out what he has. Boozer can develop without avery needing him to explain the entire franchise, and a disappointing stretch from one rostered player need not force avery into an immediate trade. That’s a different starting position from building a team whose best argument begins with eventually.

His June deal with brodiedean8 makes the point without requiring us to invent a master plan: avery sent his 2026 second, which is now held by matticus808, and received Onyeka Okongwu and Jaylon Tyson. Okongwu is on the current roster. The transaction gave avery another center option alongside Zubac, Deandre Ayton and the rest of his frontcourt.

Would you rather have Nikola Jokić or Luka Dončić as your central player? Sure. I’m biased toward the manager with the most convincing best player, because we’ve all watched ourselves get hypnotized by a beautiful bench before.

But avery doesn’t need the best individual player in Da League to change the season. He needs enough useful choices that the favorites cannot assume they’ll win this matchup while saving their actual anxiety for each other.

My prediction is that Antidote competes immediately. If that happens, every established contender has one fewer opponent it can comfortably dismiss, and avery gets to make his next roster decision from a position of strength.

The new guy gets to be picky. That’s inconvenient.

The Wembanyama deal created two present problems

The clearest evidence for the No Free Wins test is the deal between lilsweet96 and goochshot, because both managers can make a credible argument that they improved their ability to bother the favorites right now.

lilsweet sent Scottie Barnes, Paolo Banchero, Kon Knueppel and matticus808’s 2026 first. He received Victor Wembanyama from goochshot, goochshot’s 2026 third, 44Colt’s 2026 third and his own 2026 second. The first goochshot received became Caleb Wilson. Those selections are complete; nobody gets to keep counting them as unopened future possibilities.

You know the obvious objection to lilsweet’s side: he surrendered several players for one central player, and we have enough history already to know that loving your best player does not guarantee loving your final result.

I agree with the objection. I disagree with treating it as the verdict.

Look at what surrounds Wembanyama on the current roster. Domantas Sabonis, Jarrett Allen and De’Aaron Fox give lilsweet established alternatives to asking one player to carry the entire fantasy lineup, and Mikal Bridges and Dyson Daniels give him more choices beyond the center position. This is a concentrated bet inside a populated roster.

That matters because the usual punishment for concentrating value is having nowhere useful to turn afterward. lilsweet still has places to turn. My prediction is that he belongs in the immediate contender discussion, with the burden on him to show that his lineup outside Wembanyama can justify the players he surrendered.

goochshot has the opposite burden.

He now rosters Barnes, Banchero and Knueppel alongside James Harden, Donovan Mitchell and Tyrese Maxey. He also received Trey Murphy from matticus808 for his own 2026 first and 2027 first. matticus acquired goochshot’s 2026 first; matticus holds the future first.

We questioned goochshot’s direction in Hot Seat. The next test is whether he can turn this broader set of options into a better championship lineup. More choices help only if you select the right ones, and goochshot has given himself enough alternatives that blaming a lack of options would be ridiculous.

Who won the Wembanyama deal? I lean toward lilsweet’s side because I prefer concentrating value when the remaining roster can support it. That’s a preference, not a discovered fact.

The consequence for everybody else is firmer: goochshot retained a credible contender, and lilsweet emerged with one. The favorites now have to account for both.

Respectability is becoming a bad place to settle

Nighthawk2334 is the sharpest test of my thesis because he already supplied the league’s most useful reminder that an established favorite can lose to somebody outside the central conversation.

He defeated brodiedean8 in Round 1 last season. We know that. We also know he finished 11-10 in both seasons, which gives us a more interesting question than whether he can occasionally wreck somebody’s championship plans.

Can he make himself good enough that eliminating a favorite feels expected?

His June trade provides a concrete mechanism. Nighthawk sent Nikola Jović, Tre Johnson, his 2026 second and his 2027 second to matticus808, and received Tyler Herro and Neemias Queta. Herro joins a current lineup with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jamal Murray, Austin Reaves, Deni Avdija, Alperen Sengun and Jalen Duren.

In Franchise Thesis: Shane Gillis Alexander, we examined the team beyond its namesake. The next step is demanding a regular season that matches that broader roster.

The strongest counterargument is that Nighthawk has already demonstrated the thing we’re asking him to prove: he beat the best regular-season team in league history. Fine. That establishes his ability to win that playoff matchup. It does not establish that he has built enough separation to avoid needing another exceptional result.

I’m predicting a stronger regular season from Nighthawk because he exchanged development options and picks for an additional established lineup choice. If he ends up in the same middle position again, we should question his construction more seriously than we did before this trade.

BigSuge makes a related argument through a much larger change.

His losing record last season belongs to the roster he had then. It cannot serve as evidence that this current collection already failed, because he received Ja Morant and Jalen Green from Natebarrett5 for his 2026 first, 2026 second and 2027 second, and he received Kyrie Irving and Darius Garland from lilsweet for Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Matas Buzelis, brodiedean8’s 2026 first and second, and BigSuge’s 2027 first.

Those are specific changes with specific consequences. BigSuge now has more established guard choices alongside LaMelo Ball, and the rest of his current roster includes Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant and Jayson Tatum.

You can question which combination gives him the best lineup. You can question whether he exchanged too many development options for overlapping choices. You cannot rank him by last season’s failure and call that analysis.

I expect BigSuge to become a much tougher opponent. If the extra guards fail to improve his results, he will have to change the combination he uses or pursue a trade that gives him a clearer upgrade. Collecting familiar names has earned him a serious test.

It has earned him nothing else.

The favorites need better answers than another favorite

The No Free Wins test changes how we assess brodiedean8’s latest moves.

He received Julius Randle and Isaiah Collier from goochshot for Davion Mitchell, Moussa Diabaté, his 2029 first and his 2029 third. He also received Yves Missi from matticus808 for Cameron Carr and his 2029 second.

Randle appears in the current starting lineup. Missi gives brodie another center option. These deals address actual roster choices around Jokić, Cade Cunningham, Trae Young and the rest of his leading players.

But brodie’s own 2027 first belongs to BigSuge, his 2028 first belongs to Natebarrett5, and his 2029 first belongs to goochshot. That ownership matters because another manager benefits from brodie falling short in those seasons. We should avoid pretending every future adjustment will be easy.

Pressure Rankings already established his burden after the league’s best regular season ended in Round 1. The next question is whether these additions improve his usable alternatives enough to handle a league with more credible opponents.

That is the defense of his approach: brodie has strengthened choices around an extraordinary core, and the newcomers still have to prove they can beat him. I buy that defense. I still predict he will find it harder to create the same distance from the field.

alecb5 has a different advantage. He already has the most recent championship, and the current roster pairs Giddey and Dončić with Jaylen Brown, Bam Adebayo, Jalen Johnson and several other established options.

I’m placing the champion above the challenger who merely looks impressive in October. That’s how the GM Pyramid works until someone supplies a better result.

The danger for alec is accepting the old comparison group. If he measures readiness mainly against brodie and goochshot, he underestimates the number of different rosters he may need to beat.

My prediction is that championship decisions will increasingly come down to a contender’s less obvious lineup choices. The leading names remain excellent. The managers who improve the positions around them will create the meaningful difference.

You already know your best player. Pick the rest properly.

The rebuilders can decide who gets to improve

The final consequence reaches managers who may finish well outside the title race.

Asset Board covered matticus808’s future firsts. For this season, the relevant power is his ability to decide which established players he will exchange and which contender receives them.

His transaction with Nighthawk supplied Herro and Queta. His deal with goochshot supplied Murphy. More recently, matticus received Jared McCain and Natebarrett5’s 2027 third for Jaden McDaniels. Those trades show different managers finding specific uses for players matticus was willing to move.

The best objection is obvious: helping several opponents improve can make your own season worse. I expect matticus to accept that consequence while his rookie-heavy lineup develops. I do not expect every contender to benefit equally from whatever he chooses to do next.

That distinction becomes more valuable if my central prediction holds. A tightly grouped contender field gives a rebuilding manager more potential partners for a useful player, and it gives him more reason to wait for a return that fits his roster.

Natebarrett5 has a version of that choice too. He improved from 3-18 to 10-11, then exchanged Morant and Green for selections and a future second rather than treating respectability as a command to keep the same direction. His current roster includes Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper and AJ Dybantsa alongside established frontcourt players.

I’m guessing Nate still needs development before he belongs among the strongest title candidates. That does not make him irrelevant to their race. His next decision can affect which contender improves, and he has already demonstrated a willingness to favor his own longer plan over preserving familiar players.

This is where 2026 differs from the first two seasons. We have two champions, several established challengers, newcomers who can compete immediately, and rebuilding managers whose choices can strengthen particular opponents. The favorite has to survive all of it.

My preseason verdict is that Da League’s strongest roster will separate less cleanly from its rivals, and the eventual champion will need more useful decisions beyond choosing the best central player.

The easiest contender era in Da League history ended before the newcomers played a game.
