State of the League: Power Has Split Into Two Timelines

The GM Pyramid finally has enough history to become useful.

You need two things to live near the top: championship equity and evidence that your roster construction survives contact with March. brodiedean8 owns the first title, so nobody can dismiss him as some regular-season merchant who has never finished the job. But 2025 damaged the mythology. Nineteen wins and two losses should have made him untouchable. Instead Nighthawk2334 beat him in Round 1, and now every future brodiedean8 season gets judged against that collapse.

That is the tax.

We covered the pressure angle already. The new question is what the response has done to the franchise itself.

brodiedean8 enters 2026 with Jokić, Curry, LeBron, Trae, Cade, Amen and Castle, then he has Derik Queen, Yves Missi, Isaiah Collier, Ebuka Okorie and Brayden Burries behind them. The top of the roster is ridiculous. The middle gets young fast. The future pick ledger is where the bill starts arriving: BigSuge holds brodiedean8's 2027 first, Natebarrett5 holds his 2028 first, and goochshot holds his 2029 first.

That does not make the roster bad. It makes the timeline obvious.

If this works, brodiedean8 gets to argue that the Round 1 loss forced him to stop protecting tomorrow and attack the present. If it fails, he becomes the first franchise in league history to turn the best regular season ever into a multi-year chase scene.

That is bigger than a preseason favorite label.

alecb5 sits in almost the opposite historical position. The champ can point to 2025 and end the conversation. Giddey arrived, alecb5 won the title, case closed. Then this offseason he brought Walker Kessler back onto the same roster as Giddey through the June deal with matticus808, sending Tyler Herro, Chet Holmgren and a 2028 first for Tyrese Haliburton, Kessler and brodiedean8's 2027 third.

That is a championship GM behaving like the title was evidence instead of closure.

The counter-case is obvious. Haliburton and Kessler do not automatically improve a champion because roster value and fantasy production are not the same thing, and Chet Holmgren is a serious piece to give up. Fine. That is why this season matters. alecb5 no longer gets graded on whether the Giddey trade worked. It worked. He gets graded on whether the second act was necessary.

Champions get remembered. Repeat architects get canonized.

The dispersal draft did something bigger than replace three departed managers. It injected three franchises with no inherited league reputation and gave them permission to choose completely different clocks.

avery228 used the first dispersal selection on Anthony Edwards, then built the opening core with Jalen Brunson, Franz Wagner, Ivica Zubac and Pascal Siakam. That is the cleanest veteran entry of the three new teams. He later acquired Onyeka Okongwu and Jaylon Tyson from brodiedean8 for his 2026 second, and Cameron Boozer came in with the first pick of the rookie draft.

You can see what Antidote is trying to do without forcing it. Edwards, Brunson, Wagner, Siakam, Zubac, Derrick White, Josh Hart, OG Anunoby, Dejounte Murray, Okongwu. That roster does not require a five-year explanation.

This is why avery228 might be the most important new GM even if he never becomes the loudest one. He puts pressure on the veteran contenders immediately. Every old franchise gets one fewer soft landing spot because one of the expansion teams chose competence from Day 1.

matticus808 went the other way and basically turned the offseason into a laboratory.

The dispersal core started with Jalen Williams, Tyrese Haliburton, Trey Murphy, Walker Kessler and Ajay Mitchell. By the time the roster settled, Haliburton, Murphy and Kessler were gone. Chet Holmgren arrived. Darryn Peterson arrived through the rookie draft at No. 2, Kingston Flemings at No. 7, Morez Johnson at No. 9, Dailyn Swain at No. 11 and Labaron Philon at No. 16. Tre Johnson, Cason Wallace, Meleek Thomas and Nikola Jović came in through trades.

This is the purest rebuild we have had because matticus808 did not inherit scars from losing seasons. He willingly chose delay.

That makes Sam Presti's Burner the league's first real Time Value franchise.

Here is the framework: every dynasty asset has two values, what it gives you now and how many different futures it still allows later. Jokić gives brodiedean8 an enormous amount now. Peterson gives matticus808 a wider range of possible tomorrows. Those are different kinds of power.

The strongest objection is that we can romanticize youth way too easily. Young players become mediocre players all the time, picks stop being mysterious the second you use them, and eventually matticus808 has to beat somebody. Correct. That is the danger. Rebuilds look smartest before the standings exist.

But the future pick ledger keeps his options alive. He holds goochshot's 2027 first, alecb5's 2028 first and 44Colt's 2029 first. That means one bad prospect outcome does not end the plan.

He has built himself multiple exits.

lilsweet96 is where the whole league gets weird.

The dispersal draft originally gave him Scottie Barnes, Kon Knueppel, Paolo Banchero, Darius Garland and De'Aaron Fox among his first five player selections. Then he started moving pieces.

He sent Kyrie Irving and Darius Garland to BigSuge and got Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Matas Buzelis, brodiedean8's used 2026 first, brodiedean8's used 2026 second and BigSuge's 2027 first. Then came the swing that changed his franchise: Scottie Barnes, Paolo Banchero, Kon Knueppel and matticus808's 2026 first went to goochshot, while Victor Wembanyama, two 2026 thirds and lilsweet96's own 2026 second came back.

Now Wemby and friends actually has Victor Wembanyama.

This is the first true Trade Value Pyramid test in league history because there are players you evaluate by production and players where the conversation barely starts. Wembanyama belongs in the second group. He is 22 heading into this season, reportedly already one of the best basketball prospects ever, and his dynasty value sits on a completely different curve from the veterans surrounding most contenders.

You do not need to declare lilsweet96 a 2026 favorite to understand the leverage.

Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox, Mikal Bridges, Ace Bailey, Dyson Daniels, Matas Buzelis, Jeremiah Fears, Nate Ament. Plus lilsweet96 holds alecb5's 2027 first and BigSuge's 2027 first.

That roster can wait.

And that is the part the veteran contenders hate.

brodiedean8 cannot tell Curry, LeBron and the missing future firsts to come back in four seasons. alecb5 is defending a title now. 44Colt has Giannis Antetokounmpo, Devin Booker, Karl-Anthony Towns and Kawhi Leonard on a team that finished 13-8 last year. BigSuge traded this offseason for Ja Morant, Jalen Green, Kyrie Irving and Darius Garland because 6-15 did not require subtlety.

lilsweet96 can look at all of them and choose patience.

That is power too.

The most dangerous place in dynasty is not last.

Last place usually knows what it is.

The dangerous place is having enough talent to imagine a run and enough structural problems to keep talking yourself into one.

BigSuge is the test case heading into 2026. Last year's 6-15 record belongs to the old roster, so you cannot slap it onto Kyrie Irving, Ja Morant, Jalen Green and Darius Garland like they caused it. They did not. BigSuge acquired all four this offseason, with Ja and Jalen Green coming from Natebarrett5 for the 2026 first that became AJ Dybantsa, the 2026 second that became Yaxel Lendeborg, and a 2027 second. Kyrie and Garland came from lilsweet96 for Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Matas Buzelis, two already-used 2026 picks and BigSuge's 2027 first.

That is a real pivot.

Now put those four next to Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum, LaMelo Ball, Alex Sarr and VJ Edgecombe.

You can also see the risk. Tatum is reportedly healthy entering camp after returning from the Achilles tear, Durant reportedly pushed back on plans to lower his minutes after an injury-hit postseason, and Kyrie reportedly enters 2026-27 ready to resume a star point guard role after spending last season rehabbing. In fantasy terms, BigSuge has created a roster with a massive ceiling and a lot of value tied to veteran availability.

That is a better gamble than simply running back 6-15.

But now the result has consequences. Another season near the bottom would force a real decision because BigSuge has already used major trade ammo to change the roster, and lilsweet96 owns his 2027 first.

That is the Reverse Ewing Theory test: if the reinvention does not produce a jump, the problem was never one star, one injury, or one bad season. The construction itself needs another answer.

goochshot finished 18-3 last season and did not win the title. That should bother us more than it does.

brodiedean8's Round 1 exit became the league's defining failure because 19-2 is absurd and because brodie makes himself impossible to ignore. But goochshot was one win behind him and finished the season without the trophy too.

Then the offseason turned into controlled chaos.

Trey Murphy came in from matticus808 for goochshot's used 2026 first and goochshot's 2027 first. Scottie Barnes, Paolo Banchero, Kon Knueppel and the 2026 first that became Caleb Wilson came in from lilsweet96 for Victor Wembanyama and three already-used 2026 picks. Cason Wallace went to matticus808 for three future seconds. Julius Randle and Isaiah Collier went to brodiedean8 for Davion Mitchell, Moussa Diabaté and brodiedean8's 2029 first and third.

The Hot Seat piece already covered the circles. The next question is whether the circles accidentally built the most balanced contender in the league.

Maxey, Donovan Mitchell, Trey Murphy, Scottie Barnes, Paolo Banchero, Kon Knueppel, Caleb Wilson, Naz Reid. There is youth, there is current production, there are players who can still gain value, and the roster does not force goochshot into one age curve.

That makes Shep and Co. the swing franchise in this entire argument.

If goochshot wins, the lesson becomes balance. You do not need brodiedean8's extreme present or matticus808's extreme future. You build enough current strength, keep enough youth, and live between the timelines.

If he falls short again, 18-3 starts looking less like proof and more like the beginning of a pattern.

We already know regular-season greatness can lie to you.

Ask brodie.

The first two years gave us a champion, then gave us a champion who came from outside the No. 1 seed.

Year 3 is giving us something better: competing theories of dynasty management.

brodiedean8 is the compression model. Put enough elite talent into the present and force March to answer you again.

alecb5 is the champion's model. Trust the instincts that already delivered a title, then keep changing the roster before everybody else catches up.

goochshot is the balance model. Stay good now without abandoning the next version of the team.

matticus808 is the optionality model. Accept short-term pain for multiple shots at building something that lasts.

lilsweet96 is the singular-asset model. Get Wembanyama, keep young pieces and extra firsts around him, and make everybody else decide how desperate they are.

avery228 is the clean-start model. Skip the ideological war, draft Anthony Edwards, surround him with established players and see whether competence can crash the old hierarchy immediately.

That is why this preseason feels different from the first two.

Nobody agrees on what the best franchise should look like anymore.

And we finally have enough history to punish the wrong answer.

A title protects brodiedean8 and alecb5 forever, but it does not protect their next decision. Nighthawk2334 already proved a great regular season can end in one playoff round. The Giddey trade already proved one aggressive move can tilt an entire championship race. The dispersal draft already created three franchises that do not care how the old league used to rank itself.

The 2026 season will settle more than who wins Year 3.

It will decide which timeline everybody starts copying in Year 4.

And my guess, because I am absolutely guessing here, is that the league is still overvaluing the present. The oldest franchises have the loudest résumés, the biggest stars and the easiest cases to make in September. The new teams have something quieter: time, optionality and fewer mistakes they are forced to defend.

That does not mean matticus808 or lilsweet96 wins the title this year.

It means the center of gravity has already started moving toward them.

The old guard still owns Da League.
