State of the League: The Offseason Da League Split Into Two Clocks

You can't understand this offseason without starting at the membership change, because the league we're covering is not the league that finished last March. Three GMs are gone (blakeeverroad, Ctwhitaker1, and michaelhebb all walked after 2025), and three new ones walked in: avery228, matticus808, and lilsweet96. The dispersal draft on June 7 turned three dead rosters and a pile of orphaned picks into a single pool, and the new owners carved it up over 27 rounds.

That's not a roster wrinkle but a third of the room turning over in one summer, and it lit the fuse on everything that followed. avery228 walked out of the dispersal with Anthony Edwards at one overall, then built around him with Jalen Brunson, Franz Wagner, Ivica Zubac, and Pascal Siakam, a starting five that could win a title this season and was assembled by a guy who didn't have a roster in May. matticus808 took the opposite approach in the same draft, banking youth and treating future firsts like the only currency that matters (the team is literally named Sam Presti's Burner, and the man is running Presti's actual playbook). lilsweet96 did the most lilsweet96 thing imaginable for a franchise calling itself Wemby and friends: he made sure he left the dispersal owning the future, the only new GM to draft first-round picks instead of just bodies.

Three GMs entered. One picked now, two picked later. That was the tell for the whole summer.

Now look at who joined avery228 on the now side, because this is where it gets interesting.

Start with BigSuge, who finished near the bottom two years running and responded by going on the most aggressive star-buying spree the league has ever seen. He pulled Ja Morant and Jalen Green out of Natebarrett5 for a 2026 first, a 2026 second, and a 2027 second. He pulled Kyrie Irving and Darius Garland out of lilsweet96 for a package fronted by his own 2027 first. He'd already turned Jrue Holiday and Derik Queen into Anthony Davis. Stack that on Kevin Durant and LaMelo Ball and you've got a roster that reads like an All-Star ballot. Here's the thing. It also reads like a hospital chart. Morant gave the Grizzlies 20 games last year and is still nursing that elbow, Anthony Davis is Anthony Davis, and the entire build is a bet that this is the year all of them are healthy at the same time. BigSuge bet his future firsts that the answer is yes. The clock is loud.

44Colt did the same thing with less noise and even less of a parachute. He bought Giannis Antetokounmpo by shipping Jalen Brunson, Scottie Barnes, and a first to michaelhebb, and he bought Kawhi Leonard and Kristaps Porziņģis from Natebarrett5 by sending out his own 2027 first AND his own 2028 first. Read that again. The franchise that calls itself The Injury Report is built on Giannis (day-to-day, knee), Kawhi (a name attached to a trade rumor every week the Raptors get mentioned), and a center room one bad landing from chaos, and it has no first-round picks left to fix any of it. That's not a criticism of the talent. Giannis and Kawhi are top-15 players in any league. It's a description of a team with one move left, and the move is win.

Then there's the champ, and this is where my own framework gets tested. alecb5 won it all, and instead of standing pat he went and re-acquired Tyrese Haliburton and Walker Kessler from matticus808, shipping out Tyler Herro, Chet Holmgren, and his own 2028 first to do it. The defending champion mortgaging another year of the future is the single clearest signal of the offseason: the man who already owns the trophy decided the window is open RIGHT NOW and floored it.

So who's banking the years everyone else is spending?

Natebarrett5 is the cleanest example, and yes, I'm biased toward the guy who built the site you're reading this on (the ESPN-for-our-league thing was his idea, so blame him for all of it). His Coopa Troopas went from 3-18 to 10-11 and then, instead of pushing the chips in, he cashed out his veterans for the future. Selling Morant and Green to BigSuge wasn't a salary dump, because there are no salaries here. It was a GM looking at Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper, AJ Dybantsa (the real NBA No. 1 pick, taken third in our rookie draft), and Darius Acuff and deciding the timeline runs through a 21-and-under core, not a 30-and-over one. He's holding brodiedean8's 2028 first and a stack of others. That's a team building the back half of the decade while everyone above it builds for March.

lilsweet96 took it further, which is wild for a first-year GM. He turned Scottie Barnes, Paolo Banchero, and Kon Knueppel into Victor Wembanyama, then sold Kyrie and Garland to BigSuge for youth and picks. You can call it reckless or you can call it the only sane plan for a team that didn't exist 13 months ago: get the best 22-year-old on Earth, surround him with rookies and firsts, and let the win-now teams age while you don't. He named the team Wemby and friends. The friends are draft picks.

And matticus808 is the vacuum at the center of it all. He came out of the dispersal hoarding firsts and then kept hoarding, and the crown jewel is alecb5's 2028 first, which means the defending champion's down-the-road draft slot now belongs to a GM who has never finished a season in this league. When the win-now clock finally hits zero on the contenders, matticus808 is holding the bag that catches the fallout.

Here's the counter-case, because a take that doesn't survive its best objection is just a guy yelling. You could argue I'm overselling the split, and the exhibit is brodiedean8.

The villain looks like a doomsday-clock team. He opens with Stephen Curry, LeBron James, and Nikola Jokić (we covered the HeHateMe build last week, so I won't re-litigate it), and he doesn't hold his own first in 2027 or 2028. That's the oldest top-three in the league fronting a roster with no future capital, which by my own framework should make him the most extreme win-now case on the board. Except he isn't, quite. brodiedean8 walked out of the rookie draft with seven picks (Brayden Burries, Chris Cenac, Jayden Quaintance, Karim Lopez, and more), which is not what a pure win-now team does. He hedged. He's got the league's best regular-season trophy gathering dust, the worst Round 1 exit in league memory, and now a roster that's old at the top and absurdly young at the bottom with nothing in the middle. That's not a clock but two clocks taped together, hoping one of them tells the right time.

And that's exactly why the framework holds instead of breaking. The fault line this offseason isn't talent, because everybody's got talent. It's TIMELINE, and the teams that refused to pick one are the ones in the most trouble. Which brings me to goochshot, the franchise nobody's talking about and the sharpest test of all. He went 18-3 last year, the second-best regular season this league has ever produced, and he owns zero rings to show for it. Then he traded away Victor Wembanyama, the best dynasty asset in the sport, for Scottie Barnes and Paolo Banchero, betting two good young studs beat one great one. That's an Ewing Theory dare if I've ever seen one: a team voluntarily shipping the name and insisting it got better. If goochshot's bet hits, the future clock has a new frontrunner nobody saw coming. If it misses, it's the trade we re-litigate for three years.

So what does power mean now? It used to mean the standings. brodiedean8 had the best record and a ring, alecb5 had the trophy, and that was the top of the Pyramid. Not anymore. Power now means which clock you're on and whether you picked it on purpose. The teams with title equity (brodie, alecb5) spent their futures to defend the present. The teams with no equity yet (Natebarrett5, lilsweet96, matticus808) bought the future wholesale. One of those groups is going to be right, and it is going to define the next three seasons of this league.

The verdict everyone's going to argue with: the next champion of Da League is already on a roster, but the team that RUNS this league for the rest of the decade is sitting in last place in name recognition and first place in 2028 first-round picks. The trophies are at the top. The future got sold to the basement, on purpose, and the basement knew exactly what it was doing.
