Draft Notebook: Only One of the Two Sell-Offs Will Actually Lose

The 2028 first Natebarrett5 pried off brodiedean8 prices like a mid-first on paper and is likely to convey closer to pick 22, because the roster it's drawn against is a contender wearing a rebuild's price tag. That is the whole tension in this off-season's traded capital, and after two weeks of these notebooks calling every dealt first a bet on somebody falling, it's time to separate the bets that can actually cash from the ones sitting on a team that isn't going anywhere near the lottery.

Two sell-offs, two different floors

Here's the split the pick-count hides. brodiedean8 sold the way a team sells when it's changing shape, not collapsing. Strip out the outgoing names and look at what he kept and added: Amen Thompson, Trae Young, Stephon Castle, Derik Queen, Stephen Curry. Translate that to this dynasty and the floor caves faster: a roster leaning on veterans whose real-world minutes are shrinking is exactly the roster that bottoms out a year early. Which makes the 44Colt firsts the live ones. Natebarrett5's 44Colt 2027 and 2028, matticus808's 44Colt 2029, those are the tickets drawn against a team that can genuinely finish last.

What that means for the two big collectors, stated plainly: Natebarrett5's stack is stronger than matticus808's on placement, because two of his three firsts point at the roster most likely to crater, and his one soft ticket is the brodiedean8 2028. matticus808 holds more names overall, but his 44Colt 2029 is the only future first he owns that's drawn against a probable loser, and 2029 is far enough out that Giannis and Booker may not even be the story anymore.

The counter to my own read is the obvious one: brodiedean8 has been wrong-footed before, and a Trae Young roster can miss the postseason if the defense never shows up. Fair. But a team built around three ascending 22-and-unders doesn't tank on purpose, and it doesn't need to. The floor is "annoying play-in team," and annoying play-in teams hand out picks in the low 20s. You don't buy those to draft a starter. You buy those hoping the seller quits, and brodiedean8's roster is the least quittable sell-off in the league.

What I'm tracking

Three things, dynasty lens.

One: whether 44Colt's veteran core actually decays on schedule. If DeRozan and Kawhi's real-world minutes keep shrinking and the rostered production follows, the Natebarrett5 and matticus808 tickets jump a full tier by midseason. That's the single most important variable in this class.

Two: avery228, the newcomer nobody's written about, is sitting on a completely un-leveraged sheet. His only deal was shipping a 2026 second for Onyeka Okongwu and Jaylon Tyson. He owns every one of his own future firsts and a No. 1 dispersal pick in Anthony Edwards. In a league where six rosters are either stripped or stacked, clean optionality is its own asset.
