Draft Notebook: The Two Contenders Drafting Blind Through 2029

brodiedean8 will not make a first-round rookie pick until 2030. That single line reorders how you read the rest of his roster, and it is the cleanest way into the capital map now that the churn has stopped and the 2026 boards are closed.

Trace the firsts out of HeHateMe and they scatter across three different rebuilds. The 2027 first went to BigSuge in the Jaylen Brown deal a year and a half ago. The 2028 first sits with Natebarrett5, folded into the Kawhi Leonard and Kristaps Porziņģis package. The 2029 first is goochshot's now, collected last month when Julius Randle and Isaiah Collier walked in the door. Three straight drafts, three different owners, none of them brodie. A win-now team with no first-round selection on the books for four years is running a specific bet: that Trae Young and Amen Thompson and Stephon Castle win enough now that the picks he sold convey late and cheap.

alecb5 is one draft ahead on the same road. The champion owes his 2027 and 2028 firsts and does not pick in round one again until 2029. He built that hole on purpose, most of it in the Giddey trade that shipped his 2026 and 2027 firsts to a GM who has since left the league, then again this summer when his 2028 first went to matticus808 in the Holmgren swap. Rings cost picks. He has the ring. The question these notebooks keep circling is whether one title justifies drafting blind while the roster ages, and nothing in his summer suggests an answer beyond buying more now.

The other side of every one of those trades is a rebuild holding paper it did not have to earn. matticus808 leaves the off-season with goochshot's 2027 first, alecb5's 2028 first, and 44Colt's 2029 first, each one a bet on a different franchise sliding. That is collapse insurance stacked three deep across three separate rosters, and it only cashes if the league bends his way three times. Natebarrett5 runs a tighter version of the same idea: 44Colt's 2027 and 2028 firsts plus brodie's 2028, all of it pointed at teams he thinks are older than they look.

Which brings up the only real question at the top of the board, and it splits cleanly. The 2027 rookie draft order gets earned the honest way by whoever finishes worst, and the two likeliest floors, matticus and Natebarrett, both kept their own firsts. If they tank, they cash their own tickets. The engineered part is 44Colt. Its 2027, 2028, and 2029 firsts all belong to other people, so every game The Injury Report loses next season prints value for Natebarrett5, not for itself. A stripped roster that also forfeited the reward for being stripped is the worst square on this board, and we said as much when 44Colt spent its entire draft future in July. Nothing has improved it since.

The dispersal handed out its own number one, and that one was assigned, not earned. avery228 drew the first slot, took Anthony Edwards, and then did something none of the other new GMs did: nothing loud. He kept every one of his own firsts. While matticus and lilsweet96 leveraged young rosters into stacks of other teams' picks, avery sits on a clean book, a real cornerstone in Edwards, and the Onyeka Okongwu and Jaylon Tyson haul he bought from brodie for a single second. That prices out like the most efficient off-season in the league, and nobody has written a word about it.

Three things I am tracking in this class through a dynasty lens.

Darryn Peterson, matticus808's headliner rookie, disclosed in May that high creatine doses put him in the hospital with full-body cramps and became a mental hurdle through his freshman year. On a roster built entirely around future value, an availability question on your best young asset is the one risk you cannot trade your way out of. AJ Dybantsa is the reason Natebarrett5's teardown has a ceiling instead of just a floor. He came back in the Ja Morant and Jalen Green sale, and he is the piece that turns a pile of other people's firsts into an actual core. Hit, and that 2027-2028 capital becomes depth around a star. Stall, and it is just picks.

Karim Lopez is the tell on brodie's whole approach. Pick-poor and comfortable there, he answered a barren draft board by stashing youth through trades instead: Lopez, a projected top-ten talent, alongside Chris Cenac, Jayden Quaintance, and Sergio De Larrea. When you cannot draft rookies, you buy the ones already drafted. Whether that substitutes for four years of first-round selections is the experiment his roster is now running in real time.

Capital read, one line each. matticus808: asset-rich, three firsts on three collapse bets. Natebarrett5: asset-rich, and the one team 44Colt's losing pays. lilsweet96: asset-rich and young, BigSuge's 2027 first on top of a full prospect shelf. avery228: balanced and clean, the quiet cornerstone play. Nighthawk2334: balanced, every first intact and no noise. goochshot: balanced, brodie's 2029 first offsetting the 2027 he owes matticus. BigSuge: win-now, holding brodie's 2027 first after spending his own. alecb5: pick-poor, no first until 2029. brodiedean8: pick-poor, no first until 2030, betting prospects cover it. 44Colt: rebuilding with nothing to rebuild on.

The teams everyone keeps calling rich are holding other people's failures. Nobody has priced who actually fails.
