Contender Test: Who Actually Deserves the Favorite Label?

The consensus is that brodiedean8, alecb5, and goochshot belong at the top heading into 2026. Fine. Now make them prove it.

A contender in this league needs four things: enough top-end talent to survive a bad night from one star, enough playable depth that one weak roster spot does not decide a matchup, a roster built for this season instead of a theoretical version two years from now, and a front office that can still make a move if the first three assumptions are wrong.

Past results matter, but only as evidence. brodiedean8 going 19-2 last year matters because he proved he could dominate a regular season, while losing immediately to Nighthawk2334 proved domination did not make him bulletproof. alecb5 winning the championship matters because his roster survived March, but it does not award him permanent first place.

brodiedean8, HeHateMe 2025 record: 19-2 Verdict: PASS

Everybody already knows the case. Nikola Jokić, Cade Cunningham, Trae Young, Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Amen Thompson, Stephon Castle. brodiedean8 can fill a lineup without asking you to talk yourself into very much.

That matters, but last year's 19-2 is not proof that he enters 2026 clearly ahead of everybody else. That team lost in Round 1, and this roster is not frozen in place.

He spent the offseason turning over pieces again. The biggest recent move sent Jrue Holiday, Brandon Ingram, Ousmane Dieng, Egor Dëmin, alecb5's 2026 third, and 44Colt's 2027 third for Trae Young. Later he added Julius Randle and Isaiah Collier while sending Davion Mitchell, Moussa Diabaté, and his own 2029 first and third. He also brought in Yves Missi for Cameron Carr and his 2029 second.

Strip away last year's standings and ask whether a front office could still defend this construction. Yes.

Trae joins Jokić and Cade as another player you can reasonably build possessions around. Amen Thompson and Stephon Castle give him another layer underneath the veteran names. Derik Queen gives him a younger center piece. He also spent seven selections in this summer's rookie draft, including Brayden Burries, Ebuka Okorie, Chris Cenac, Jayden Quaintance, Karim Lopez, Cameron Carr, and Sergio De Larrea, although Carr has since moved.

The counterargument is obvious. The future-pick ledger is ugly. BigSuge holds brodiedean8's 2027 first. Natebarrett5 holds his 2028 first. goochshot holds his 2029 first and third. matticus808 holds his 2029 second.

That does not sink a contender by itself, but it changes the standard. brodiedean8 has already pushed enough future value outward that this roster needs to act like a contender now. There is less room for a patient reset if the top-end mix disappoints.

I can criticize the asset position and still approve the roster. Jokić, Cade, Trae, Amen, Castle, Curry and LeBron give him too many answers for me to fail him because Nighthawk caught him once in March.

The test says brodiedean8 is real without pretending he is invincible.

alecb5, P. Giddey 2025 record: 14-7, league champion Verdict: PASS

The easy version of the alecb5 story starts and ends with Josh Giddey, which is exactly why it misses the point.

Yes, the Giddey trade helped power a championship. alecb5 sent Walker Kessler, his 2026 first, and his 2027 first for Giddey. He got the title. Whatever anybody thought about the price when the deal happened, the competitive objective was accomplished.

Now look at the current roster instead of rerunning last year's victory lap.

Luka Dončić. Jaylen Brown. Bam Adebayo. Jalen Johnson. Giddey. Desmond Bane. Immanuel Quickley. Tyrese Haliburton. Walker Kessler.

And yes, Kessler is back because alecb5 later received Haliburton, Kessler, and brodiedean8's 2027 third from matticus808 for Chet Holmgren and alecb5's 2028 first.

That roster passes because it does not require Giddey to repeat one magical season. He can be one major piece instead of the entire argument.

There is a cost. alecb5 no longer owns his 2027 first or 2028 first. lilsweet96 holds the 2027 first. matticus808 holds the 2028 first. The roster therefore has less reason to retreat if something goes wrong.

But the championship defense is defensible from the GM chair because the starting group is good enough to justify the exposure. Luka gives the roster its centerpiece. Brown, Bam and Jalen Johnson keep the lineup from becoming one-player dependent. Haliburton and Giddey add creation. Kessler gives him another center option next to Bam.

The popular take is that alecb5 proved everything last year, when he really proved only that he could win last year.

This year's roster still has to do it again.

I just think it can.

Championship banners do not pass the Contender Test; this roster does.

This is the team I expect people to overrate, and I understand why.

goochshot went 18-3. He now has Tyrese Maxey, Donovan Mitchell, Scottie Barnes, Paolo Banchero, Trey Murphy, Kon Knueppel, Caleb Wilson and Naz Reid in the starting group. That is a serious collection of players.

He also made one of the biggest moves of the offseason, sending Victor Wembanyama plus three 2026 picks to lilsweet96 for Barnes, Banchero, Knueppel and the first-round pick from matticus808. That conveyed pick became Caleb Wilson.

So the actual return became Barnes, Banchero, Knueppel and Wilson, and that is the proper way to judge it.

goochshot's argument is depth. He does not need one player to carry the whole thing because the roster has several paths to production. Maxey, Mitchell, Barnes and Banchero can all sit near the center of a winning lineup. Trey Murphy adds another strong starting option. Knueppel comes off a historic rookie season. Wilson was the fourth pick in this league's rookie draft.

The objection is the price.

Victor Wembanyama is now on lilsweet96's roster. I do not have to invent a valuation model to tell you what goochshot decided: he preferred four major pieces to one centerpiece.

That can work, but it can also leave him with the deepest roster among the favorites while somebody else still has the best player in a playoff matchup.

There is another layer. matticus808 sent Trey Murphy to goochshot for his 2027 first along with his 2026 first, which has already conveyed. His future ledger still includes brodiedean8's 2029 first and third, plus several seconds, so he is not completely locked out of future moves.

The concern is whether this roster has enough separation at the very top.

Last year's 18-3 says goochshot already knows how to build a regular-season machine. The Wembanyama trade probably makes the weekly roster easier to fill because Barnes, Banchero, Knueppel and Wilson spread value across four slots.

March may ask a different question.

That is why this is a conditional pass. I believe the depth and the regular-season floor; I am less certain that the consolidated version of this roster scares me as much as the number of good names makes people think it should.

goochshot built a contender, but I am still not making him the favorite.

Nighthawk2334, Shane Gillis Alexander 2025 record: 11-10 Verdict: PASS

Nighthawk is the team people are going to underrate because 11-10 does not look like a contender's record.

Then he knocked out brodiedean8.

One upset should not erase a full regular season, but that playoff result forces you to inspect the roster instead of dismissing it by record.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the centerpiece. Around him are Alperen Sengun, Jamal Murray, Lauri Markkanen, Jaren Jackson, Deni Avdija, Austin Reaves, Tyler Herro and Jalen Duren.

That starting group passes the basic talent test.

Nighthawk also made a clear win-now move this summer. He sent Nikola Jović, Tre Johnson, his 2026 second, and his 2027 second to matticus808 for Tyler Herro and Neemias Queta.

I can defend that.

Tre Johnson may eventually become the best asset in that deal. We cannot know that yet, and pretending we do is exactly how dynasty analysis turns into prospect fan fiction. Nighthawk took value that may pay later and bought another established starting guard for a team that already has Shai, Sengun and Murray.

That is coherent.

The bench is not why I am passing him. Jakob Poeltl, Wendell Carter, Coby White, P.J. Washington, Tari Eason and Kel'el Ware give him options, but the case starts with the first nine names.

The counterargument is stronger here than it is with brodie or alecb5. Nighthawk was barely above .500 last season, and one playoff upset cannot carry the entire projection.

Agreed.

But I do not think the process says that 11-10 team should be valued as an 11-10 team again after adding Herro.

Shai reportedly enters the season as the reigning NBA MVP after leading Oklahoma City to the 2025 championship and winning Finals MVP. That matters to this fantasy roster because Nighthawk's entire construction starts with having one of the strongest anchors in the league. Herro adds another established option without requiring Nighthawk to rebuild the lineup around him.

This is the team I trust more than the consensus does.

Nighthawk is a contender, and treating him like last year's fifth-place team is stale pricing.

44Colt, The Injury Report 2025 record: 13-8 Verdict: FAIL

Somebody has to fail, and this one is uncomfortable because the names are excellent.

Giannis Antetokounmpo. Devin Booker. Karl-Anthony Towns. Evan Mobley. Kawhi Leonard. Brandon Ingram. Norman Powell. Miles Bridges. Keyonte George.

If this were a lineup-name contest, congratulations.

The Contender Test demands more.

44Colt has pushed a significant amount of future flexibility away from the roster. Natebarrett5 holds 44Colt's 2027 first and 2028 first. matticus808 holds 44Colt's 2028 second and 2029 first. alecb5 holds one of the 2027 thirds.

That is acceptable if the current roster has a clear championship advantage.

I do not see one.

The offseason moves improved depth in places. 44Colt sent Trae Young to brodiedean8 and received Jrue Holiday, Brandon Ingram, Ousmane Dieng, Egor Dëmin, alecb5's 2026 third and his own 2027 third. matticus808 later sent Miles Bridges, Nic Claxton and 44Colt's own 2027 second to 44Colt for a large future-pick package.

The intent is defensible. This team wants playable veterans around Giannis, Booker, Towns and Mobley.

The problem is price versus separation.

If I am giving up future firsts in a dynasty league, I need the current roster to force everybody else into uncomfortable comparisons. I need the answer to brodiedean8, alecb5 and Nighthawk to be obvious.

It isn't.

Giannis and Booker are enough to keep this team dangerous. Towns and Mobley give it frontcourt quality. Kawhi reportedly remains part of Toronto's long-term plans, so I am not turning an old health reputation into a current fantasy claim that the provided information does not support.

I simply prefer the construction of the four teams above it, which is a different criticism.

44Colt has a good team, but the price already paid demands a great one.

I am not laying contender odds on good.

brodiedean8 gets the top spot because nobody else matches the combination of last year's regular-season dominance and this year's top-end roster. alecb5 gets second because the defending champion still has Luka, Brown, Bam, Jalen Johnson, Giddey, Haliburton and Kessler. Nighthawk jumps goochshot because I trust Shai plus Sengun, Murray, Herro and the rest of that starting group more in a playoff matchup than I trust goochshot's depth-first construction.

44Colt is the cut line.

Five teams can call themselves contenders in September.
