Draft Notebook: 44Colt Spent Its Entire Draft Future

44Colt no longer owns a first-round pick in 2027, 2028, or 2029. Not one. The Injury Report sold all three off the board, and the buyers weren't random: 44Colt's 2027 and 2028 firsts sit on Natebarrett5's ledger, the 2029 first sits on matticus808's. One franchise mortgaged three straight rookie drafts, and two rebuilders split the receipts. That is the single most important fact in this class, because it tells you the incoming picks aren't going to the teams that lose games. They're going to the teams that bought the right to be patient.

Start with the seller, because the seller sets the price. 44Colt turned its 2027 and 2028 firsts (plus brodiedean8's 2028 first and Kyshawn George) into Kawhi Leonard and Kristaps Porziņģis, then flipped the 2029 first into Miles Bridges and Nic Claxton. Price that package for a second. Kawhi's status is under an investigation the reports say could void his availability this summer, and Porziņģis has spent his career fighting his own body. 44Colt paid three years of draft capital for a win-now core whose two centerpieces come with a health asterisk and a legal one. If the wins show up, fine. If they don't, 44Colt handed matticus808 and Natebarrett5 lottery tickets and got fragility back.

Which brings us to where the capital pooled. matticus808's roster is doing exactly what the team name promises: hoarding. Beyond 44Colt's 2029 first, he's holding alecb5's 2028 first, and he stripped his backcourt down to prospects on purpose, drafting or trading in Darryn Peterson, Kingston Flemings, Labaron Philon, and Thomas Sorber. We laid out the shape of that rebuild in the franchise thesis, so I won't relitigate it. The new wrinkle is the timeline. Peterson and Flemings are teenagers; Philon is buried behind Anfernee Simons on Philadelphia's bench and won't post fantasy value for a while. matticus is betting that his guard stash matures on the same clock as those 2028 and 2029 firsts convert. If 44Colt and alecb5 slip, that clock rings loud.

Natebarrett5 is the other vault, and his path is more instructive. Coopa Troopas hold 44Colt's 2027 and 2028 firsts and brodiedean8's 2028 first, three outside first-rounders on one desk. He got there by selling, not losing. Nate shipped Ja Morant and Jalen Green to BigSuge for a stack of firsts and cashed the best of them at the top of the board, which is how AJ Dybantsa landed on his roster. We covered that trade the week it resolved. What matters now is what Dybantsa is doing to the real Washington roster: the reports already have him pushing Bilal Coulibaly toward the bench and clouding Kyshawn George's minutes. A rookie who reorganizes an NBA depth chart in July is the kind of centerpiece a rebuild is supposed to produce. Nate manufactured a top pick without bottoming out, which answers the question about whether this draft order was earned or engineered. It was engineered. The teams sitting on premium 2026 capital didn't tank into it. They traded veterans for it.

The genuine earn-it rebuild is lilsweet96, and it looks different. Wemby and friends came out of the dispersal draft with the youngest core in the league, then leaned all the way in, adding Wemby, Jeremiah Fears, Ace Bailey, and Nate Ament while sending out Kyrie Irving and Darius Garland. lilsweet still holds BigSuge's 2027 first, pending. That roster has no interest in this year's standings, and it shouldn't.

Here's the counter-case matticus and Nate have to answer. Their pile of 2028 and 2029 firsts is only treasure if brodiedean8 and 44Colt decline. brodie's win-now build (Amen Thompson, Trae Young, Stephon Castle, Derik Queen) is loud enough that his sold-off firsts could convert as late ones, and a late first is cheap currency, not a franchise piece. The hoard doesn't pay off on its own. It pays off if the sellers crater. That's the whole thesis, and it's a wager on other people's failure, which is a slower, less certain thing than drafting your own guy.

Three things I'm tracking through this class on dynasty value:

• Dybantsa's rookie usage. He's the highest pick that already resolved to a name, and he's Nate's return on selling two injured guards. If his role in Washington holds, Nate's rebuild has a spine.
• matticus's guard clock. Peterson, Flemings, and Philon are all deferred value. Whether they arrive together, and on schedule with those 2028-29 firsts, decides if the hoard is a plan or a pile.
• The sold-first market. Watch 44Colt and brodiedean8's records. Every game they lose raises the pick that lands on someone else's desk. Their seasons are now other franchises' lottery odds.

Capital reads, one line each:

• matticus808: asset-rich, longest runway in the league.
• Natebarrett5: asset-rich, engineered a top pick without tanking.
• lilsweet96: rebuilding, youngest core, earned it in the dispersal room.
• goochshot: balanced, reloaded and pocketed brodie's 2029 first and third.
• alecb5: win-now, spent a 2028 first to stay a contender.
• Nighthawk2334: balanced, sat out the trade frenzy almost entirely.
• avery228: pick-poor, quiet, few chips left to move.
• BigSuge: win-now, sold his 2027 first for Kyrie and Garland.
• brodiedean8: pick-poor, sold 2028 and 2029 firsts, all chips on the table.
• 44Colt: pick-poor, no first-rounder for three straight drafts, and the injury notes on his purchases are the whole risk.

The next three rookie drafts already have owners. Most of them just aren't the teams whose names are on the picks.
