Draft Notebook: goochshot Cornered the 2029 Draft Early

Evan Cole·July 31, 2026·4 min read

brodiedean8's 2029 first-round pick prices like a late first if his win-now roster holds and like a lottery ticket if it collapses, and either way it stopped being his this offseason. goochshot owns it now, plus brodie's 2029 third, both collected in the deal that shipped Julius Randle and Isaiah Collier to HeHateMe. We graded that trade the day it landed. What nobody has priced yet is what it did to the capital map three and four years out.

The firsts everyone keeps counting are the wrong ones. The 2027 and 2028 rounds are already spoken for, and that's old news: matticus808 and Natebarrett5 turned June into a first-round land grab, and the notebook covered the hoard. The live market is 2029, and goochshot walked into it while the rest of the room was still arguing about next summer.

The Two-Window Play

Look at what he actually did. In June, goochshot sold his own 2026 and 2027 firsts to matticus808 for Trey Murphy, a clean bet on his current roster. Then in July he flipped Randle, a player he'd just picked up, into brodie's 2029 first and third. Read the timeline plainly: goochshot cashed his near-term picks for a scorer and bought a rival's distant picks for a rental. He is short his own next two drafts and long somebody else's fourth one. That is a GM playing two windows at once, and it only works if the far pick appreciates. Murphy is currently attached to trade chatter, which is a wrinkle for a franchise that paid two firsts to roster him, but it doesn't touch the 2029 position at all.

That position is the whole story, so price it. brodie's 2029 first is worth what brodie's core is worth in three seasons. Right now his roster is Trae Young, Amen Thompson, Stephon Castle, Derik Queen: a real team, built by selling every future he had. If that group ages the way win-now cores usually do, goochshot is holding a top-five pick he paid a Randle rental to get. If brodie stays a contender, goochshot bought a late first and a coffee. Cheap future capital on a contender's books is the only kind that ever pays, and goochshot found the cheapest version in the league.

Which franchise gets the cleanest path from this draft board?

Three Landlords, No Deeds

Now the debtor. brodiedean8 doesn't control a first-round pick in 2027, 2028, or 2029, and each one went to a different creditor. His 2027 first sits with BigSuge, routed there through alecb5. His 2028 first belongs to Natebarrett5. His 2029 first is goochshot's. Three straight drafts, three separate landlords, no reacquisition in sight. We wrote that brodie traded every future he had; the update is that the future is now scattered across the standings instead of stacked on one rival's roster, which makes it harder to buy back and easier to forget he ever owned it. 44Colt is in the same hole for the same reason, having handed its 2027 and 2028 firsts to Natebarrett5 in the Kawhi and Porzingis deal and its 2029 first to matticus808 for Miles Bridges and Nic Claxton. Two franchises, zero firsts between them for three years.

The counted rooms first: matticus808 holds goochshot's 2027, alecb5's 2028, and 44Colt's 2029, and he's already turning paper into people, with Darryn Peterson, the second pick of the 2026 draft and a consensus five-star, sitting next to Tre Johnson and Thomas Sorber. Natebarrett5 owns three firsts, 44Colt's 2027 and 2028 and brodie's 2028, on top of the pick that already resolved into AJ Dybantsa. Those two are asset-rich and rebuilding on purpose, and the market's read on them is set. lilsweet96 is the rebuild that already spent, not hoarded: Wembanyama, Nate Ament out of the 2026 lottery, Jeremiah Fears, Ace Bailey. He converted his capital into bodies instead of banking it, which is a bet that his young core beats everyone else's pick pile. It is a defensible bet and a very different one.

Engineered Before Tip-Off

Was the top of the order earned or engineered? Neither, and that's the point. The 2027 top was engineered a season early by the buyers, which we covered. The 2029 top is being engineered before a single 2026 game tips off. goochshot owns a first in a draft whose lottery odds nobody can see yet, keyed to a roster that hasn't started aging. You cannot tank your way to that pick. You can only buy it in advance from a GM who needed the star more than the future, and goochshot already did.

Three things I'm tracking through a dynasty lens:

  1. brodie's roster clock. goochshot's 2029 first is a direct short position on HeHateMe's contention window. Every month brodie's core stays good, that pick loses value; the first sign of slippage flips it into the best asset goochshot owns.
  2. Peterson's usage on matticus808. A five-star second pick is the kind of realized rookie value that makes a pick hoard redundant. If he initiates, matticus doesn't need all three of those firsts. If he doesn't, he does.
  3. Yaxel Lendeborg's age curve on Natebarrett5. He went 11th overall in the real 2026 NBA draft and turns 24 in September, old for a rookie in a league that pays for runway. In a stable of young firsts, he's the one asset whose clock is already running.

Capital read, one line each: matticus808, asset-rich. Natebarrett5, asset-rich. goochshot, balanced and long 2029. lilsweet96, rebuilding on players not picks. alecb5, balanced win-now. BigSuge, balanced. Nighthawk2334, win-now and pick-thin. avery228, balanced and quiet. brodiedean8, pick-poor and all-in. 44Colt, pick-poor.

The picks that decide 2029 are already on the board. The only mystery left is whose season falls apart first to make them worth what goochshot paid.
