Draft Notebook: Two Rosters Are Hoarding Everyone Else's Firsts

The Story

Three of the next two drafts' first-round picks sit on Natebarrett5's roster, and none of them started there. He holds brodiedean8's 2028 first, 44Colt's 2027 first, and 44Colt's 2028 first. That is the whole story of this off-season's capital in one line: the picks that decide 2027 and 2028 have drifted off the teams that will actually make them and puddled on a couple of rosters betting those teams fall apart.

Price Natebarrett5's position first, because it is the cleanest. The Coopa Troopas sold Ja Morant, Jalen Green, and Thomas Sorber into other GMs' win-now math, and the return already resolved: AJ Dybantsa at the top of the rookie board, Yaxel Lendeborg, Collin Murray-Boyles. Then he worked the veteran side, moving Kawhi Leonard and Kristaps Porziņģis to 44Colt for Kyshawn George and that stack of 44Colt firsts. Read the timeline plainly. By 2028 Natebarrett5 is holding a No. 1 he already cashed, two more first-round swings on 44Colt's future, and brodiedean8's 2028 on top. That is not a rebuild, but rather a bet placed on two specific franchises bottoming out.

matticus808 is running the same play with a different hand, and Sam Presti's Burner is the right name for it. He sold Tyrese Haliburton and Walker Kessler to the champion and pulled back alecb5's 2028 first. He sold Miles Bridges and Nic Claxton to 44Colt and pulled back 44Colt's 2029 first. Around those two picks he built a rookie shelf: Chet Holmgren, Tre Johnson, Kingston Flemings, Darryn Peterson, Thomas Sorber, Cason Wallace. His 2028 roster is young enough to compete and armed with two outside firsts if the timeline slips. Every star matticus808 moved this summer came back as a first-round pick on somebody else's clock.

Now the honest part, because a capital map is only as good as the teams it bets against. Both piles are wagers on brodiedean8 and 44Colt collapsing, and neither collapse is a lock. brodiedean8 gutted his future, we covered that, but the roster he built with it is real: Amen Thompson, Trae Young, Derik Queen, Stephon Castle. A team that good does not hand out a top-five pick, and if brodiedean8's 2028 lands at No. 20, Natebarrett5's headline asset is a late first with a bow on it. Same math on 44Colt, who spent its entire draft future on Giannis, Devin Booker, and a veteran core. If those two contend even modestly, the picks pooling on Natebarrett5 and matticus808 price out like late firsts, not lottery tickets. The bet is only sound if the sellers were right that the buyers overpaid.

That is the real question under the draft order: was the top earned or engineered? In this league it was engineered, and openly. alecb5, the defending champion, shipped its 2028 first to matticus808 to keep the window open now. BigSuge holds brodiedean8's 2027 first, bought while stacking Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, and Darius Garland for a title run. The highest picks in the next two classes belong to teams hoping the champion ages and the villain finally pays his debts. Nobody tanked into this. They traded for the right to profit from someone else's decline.

lilsweet96 is the outlier worth watching, because Wemby and friends is the one honest rebuild in the room. No veteran core to protect, a shelf of rookies in Nate Ament, Ryan Kalkbrenner, Hannes Steinbach, and Bennett Stirtz, Victor Wembanyama as the centerpiece, and BigSuge's own 2027 first tucked away. Wembanyama reportedly dealt with a shoulder blood clot last season, and for a contender that is a scare; for a franchise building on a three-year horizon it barely moves the dynasty price. lilsweet96 was the only new GM who left the dispersal draft holding future firsts, and the roster construction has stayed true to that instinct ever since.

Three things I am tracking in this class through a dynasty lens. First, whether Dybantsa hits the ceiling that justifies selling two starting guards to get him; a No. 1 who profiles as a rotation piece turns a franchise-defining sale into a lateral move. Second, Cameron Boozer, drafted third by Memphis, the swing rookie whose year decides how much matticus808's and Natebarrett5's outside firsts are actually worth. Third, Jaylon Tyson, who took a frightening fall but reportedly kept an All-Rookie track; avery228 got him and Onyeka Okongwu for a single second-round pick, and that is the kind of cheap swing that quietly wins a rebuild.

Capital read, one line each. Natebarrett5: asset-rich, three outside firsts and a No. 1 already banked. matticus808: asset-rich, two outside firsts and the deepest rookie shelf. lilsweet96: rebuilding the right way, young everywhere with a pick to match. BigSuge: balanced, win-now stars plus brodiedean8's 2027. goochshot: balanced, holding brodiedean8's 2029 first as a hedge. Nighthawk2334: win-now, spending future seconds to rent Tyler Herro, who reportedly just made his first All-Star team. alecb5: pick-poor by choice, a champion who mortgaged 2028 to defend now. avery228: thin, one cheap wing swing and little else on the board. brodiedean8: pick-poor, no first of his own until the next decade. 44Colt: pick-poor, the entire future already spent, as we wrote.

The picks are not where the players are. Somebody in this league is going to make a lottery selection wearing another GM's logo, and the only open question is whose face drops when the envelope opens.
